You're in control of a paddle that slides left to right across the screen, and the object of the game is to keep a ball from dropping off the bottom of the play area. You use your paddle to hit the ball, bouncing it off the walls toward the upper part of the screen, where you use it to break bricks. Sound familiar? Yup, if you've played a lot of games, you've probably seen a few versions of this one before. But Arkanoid's special - it's based on one of the very first versions of this game, created way back in the arcade days! Retro is in, and this game is definitely retro!
Don't let the simple game rules and oldschool feel fool you, though - this game's not easy, and it's packed with all-new twists. With the gameplay covering both screens on the DS, it's bigger and better than ever, and the fast-paced action will do more than enough to keep your attention. As you move through the game, the levels get harder and harder, and you'll have to use all your skill to make it through!
Some of the later levels are extremely challenging, but the game's got ways of helping you out. Power-ups can make your paddle longer, your ball stronger, or multiply your ball for a short time. Also, you've got quite a few chances to get things right, as you've pretty much got three lives per level - there's a bar underneath your paddle that will bounce the ball right back up into the play area three times if you miss it. Look out for annoying anti-power-ups that do things like making your paddle shorter!
One of the coolest ideas in this game is the shop. With the points you earn throughout the game, you can buy new shapes of blocks, new background wallpapers, new borders and even new in-game soundtracks. The more you play, the more you can customize and decorate, which adds an extra level of awesome. Multiplayer mode is also available for two or four players, which really rocks if you've got friends to challenge. Use anti-power-ups against your friends - slow down their ball, add extra bricks to their screen or shorten their paddle to come out victorious!
You can use the stylus for game control, or you can use the directional pad. Using the stylus is a bit tricky to master, since you can drag and move your paddle by touching any part of the screen that's lined up with it. It's a little weird to drag an object you aren't actually touching with your stylus, so it takes some practice. You will probably find it much easier to just use the directional pad. It's a retro game, after all!
Although at first the whole idea might look simple or even somewhat boring, it's actually a really hard game to put down! The customization is a quirky cool feature, and there are several paths you can take to complete the game, so even if you beat it you can always take a different path when you pick it up again. To top it off, the soundtrack is awesome.
Arkanoid's not your average retro game - it's totally cool despite the fact that your parents probably played it!
